Levels of Care Guide

What Is Residential Treatment (RTC)?

Inpatient care provides full-time, medically monitored treatment for individuals facing serious mental health symptoms that can’t be managed in outpatient or home environments. It’s the highest level of care outside of hospitalization.

Residential care may be right for you if you:

Are experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicidal ideation
Have not improved in outpatient or PHP levels of care
Need a safe, structured space to stabilize before transitioning
Are struggling with trauma, depression, or substance use in crisis

Frequently Asked Questions

Residential treatment is a 24/7, non-hospital level of care where you live on-site while receiving therapy, psychiatric support, and structured programming. It provides full-time mental health stabilization in a safe, supportive environment.

Hospitalization is typically short-term and focused on emergency stabilization. Residential treatment is longer, more holistic, and offers a healing environment with therapy, structure, and time to recover.

Residential care is best for people with moderate to severe mental health symptoms who haven’t responded to outpatient therapy or who need full-time support to prevent hospitalization or relapse.

Most residential stays range from 2 to 6 weeks, depending on your clinical needs, goals, and progress. Some may benefit from a longer stay as determined with your care team.

Each day includes a structured schedule of group therapy, individual sessions, psychiatric care, holistic therapies (like art or mindfulness), meals, rest, and peer support—all within a supervised setting.
